Key History and Mythology Origin and Legend (Tripurasura Samharam): The town gets its name (Achu-Iru-Bagam or Achirupakkam, meaning "broken chariot axis") from a legendary war. When Lord Shiva rode his chariot to destroy the three flying demon citadels (Tripurasura), the axle of his chariot broke because he forgot to worship Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha) first. After Shiva offered prayers to Vinayaka, the axle was fixed, and the demon fortress was destroyed. Achu Muri Vinayaka: A separate shrine commemorates this event, featuring a unique form of Vinayaka called Achu Muri Vinayaka. Tevaram Recognition: The temple is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, and its presiding deity is praised in 7th-century hymns by Tamil Nayanar saints, including Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar. It is recognized as the 29th Shiva shrine in the Thondai region. Chola Inscriptions features historical stone inscriptions from the reign of Kulothunga Chola I (dating between 1070 and 1120 CE), which record endowments of land, gold, and sheep to the temple. In these inscriptions, Lord Shiva is referred to as Achukkontu Aruliya Tevar. Yugas and Worship: According to regional temple lore (Sthala Purana), the deity was worshipped by sages like Kannuva and Gowtama in Treta Yuga, Brahma and Vishnu in Dwapara Yuga, and Agastya in Kali Yuga. Architectural and Structural Features Dual Sanctums: The temple houses two presiding swayambu (self-manifested) lingas—Atcheeswarar and Umai Atcheeswarar—along with separate shrines for their respective consorts (Sundaranayagi / Umayambigai and Ilangili Ammai). Rajagopuram: It features a traditional five-tiered rajagopuram (gateway tower). Thala Virutcham: The sacred temple tree (thala virutcham) is the Sara Kondrai. Major Festival: The 10-day Chittirai Brahmotsavam festival is celebrated annually during the Tamil month of Chittirai (April–May).
