Explore Mapungubwe National Park in South Africa, a remarkable destination where ancient African history, spectacular landscapes and abundant wildlife come together along the Limpopo River.
On my journey towards the Zimbabwe border, I finally visit a park I had wanted to explore for a long time. Mapungubwe has everything I look for in an overland adventure: fascinating history, beautiful scenery, wildlife encounters and unusual geographical landmarks.
The park protects the remains of the ancient Kingdom of Mapungubwe, one of the earliest known indigenous kingdoms in southern Africa. I visit Mapungubwe Hill to learn more about this important archaeological site and explore the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. I also visit Poachers’ Corner, an intriguing landmark near the meeting point of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
The scenery is just as impressive, with rugged terrain, distinctive landscapes and the Limpopo River forming the park’s northern boundary. Wildlife is another major attraction, and my visit does not disappoint, with memorable encounters including elephants and other animals during game drives through different sections of the park.
From historical sites and river landscapes to wildlife viewing and challenging trails, join me as I explore one of South Africa’s most fascinating national parks on my solo overland journey.
