Grieving a living parent is a form of grief that many eldest daughters experience but rarely have language for. In this video, I’m talking about the painful process of grieving the parent you needed and wanted them to be—the loving, emotionally available, protective, accountable parent who could acknowledge where they went wrong—while accepting the parent they actually are. For many eldest daughters, healing requires letting go of the hope that one day their parent will finally change, apologize, validate their experience, or become emotionally safe. This does not mean excusing parental behavior, abandoning your boundaries, or pretending the relationship was healthy. It means accepting reality so you can stop organizing your life around trying to receive something your parent may not be capable of giving. We’ll talk about ambiguous loss, grief, childhood emotional neglect, parentification, eldest daughter syndrome, emotional unavailability, parental wounds, acceptance, boundaries, self-parenting, and breaking generational cycles.
