The Last Tide Cinematic Post-Apocalyptic Environment and 4K Matte Painting *The Last Tide* was developed to transform a collection of ready-made models into a cinematic environment with a clear visual narrative. The project began with assets and textures from *KitBash3D’s Wasteland* collection. Scene assembly, composition, lighting, and rendering were completed in *Autodesk 3ds Max 2026* using **Octane Render**. The final image was refined through color grading, atmospheric dust, and subtle lighting effects. The project owner supplied the initial assets and selected the rendering engine. Concept development, scene execution, supplementary geometry, and final deliverables were completed in collaboration with an AI assistant. *Concept and Environmental Storytelling* The central idea is a ship stranded on a dried seabed, repurposed as an industrial settlement. Rusted structures, shipping containers, salvaged equipment, and scattered lights suggest that life continues in this abandoned landscape. A small, solitary traveler in the foreground establishes the scale of the ship and the surrounding environment. Warm late-day sunlight against cooler shadows reinforces the atmosphere of stillness, decay, and isolation. *1. Asset Review and Selection* The source scene was inspected to understand its object hierarchy, model dimensions, Octane materials, and texture paths. Neutral-material previews were generated to compare the buildings’ forms and silhouettes, allowing assets to be selected according to their role in the composition. A ship-based structure from the kit was chosen as the focal point. An industrial gateway, towers, and smaller buildings were selected to establish depth and develop the surrounding settlement. *2. Scene Composition and Cameras* The environment was organized into foreground, midground, and background. The ship was positioned in the midground toward the right side of the frame, while distant industrial structures created successive layers of depth. Containers, a bus, a trailer, tanks, barrels, crates, and rocks added detail and scale throughout the scene. Two cameras were prepared: a primary camera for the final composition and an alternate camera overlooking the approach to the settlement. The primary camera’s height, angle, and distance were refined through test renders. A widescreen aspect ratio of approximately *2.39:1* was selected for the final image. *3. Supplementary Geometry* A procedural dry-seabed terrain was created to connect the kit assets within a continuous environment. Surface variations, distant ridges, and rock distribution were generated and adjusted through scripting. Local light fixtures, illuminated ship signals, and a simple human scale figure were also added. The figure serves a compositional and storytelling purpose rather than functioning as a detailed custom character. Instancing was used for selected repeated elements to simplify scene management and editing. *4. Materials and Background* The kit’s existing Octane materials were retained, and their texture paths were connected to the available files. Poly Haven’s *Aerial Sand* texture set supplied the ground’s color, normal, and roughness maps. *5. Lighting and Look Development* A low-angle sun was positioned to reveal the ship’s rusted surfaces, overall volume, and rooftop structures. Small amber lights introduced secondary points of interest and suggested human activity within the settlement. An Octane scattering medium provided atmospheric perspective. Dust intensity, exposure, saturation, and highlight handling were refined through successive test renders to preserve detail around the focal point while gradually reducing contrast in the distance. *6. Rendering and Output Management* One 4K rendering attempt with additional passes stalled. After reopening the saved scene, a standalone Beauty render completed successfully, and denoising was moved to post-production. *7. Matte Painting and Final Compositing* An editable PSD was prepared with five separate layers: Original render, retained as a hidden reference Denoised render Cinematic color finish Added atmospheric dust Subtle light bloom *8. Quality Control and Delivery* The saved Max scene was reopened to verify the active camera, rendering engine, image dimensions, and output settings. All *120 texture-file references* were available, with no missing textures reported in the final check.
