The Extreme Ultraviolet and X-ray Irradiance Sensors (EXIS) on the GOES- R series satellites monitor solar irradiance and detect solar flares that can cause radio communications blackouts, disruptions to electric power grids, errors in GPS navigation, and hazards to satellites, high-altitude aircraft, and astronauts. The EXIS instruments, which provide the earliest warning of impending space weather storms, were built by the University of Colorado Boulder’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP).
