When we picture prehistoric humans, we often imagine people permanently covered in dirt, sweat, and unpleasant smells. But the reality of prehistoric hygiene is far more surprising—and much more complicated—than that. Early humans had no showers, toothpaste, deodorant, or modern soap, but that did not mean they ignored cleanliness. Depending on where they lived, they could wash in rivers and lakes, clean specific parts of the body, use fibrous plants or chewing sticks on their teeth, and make use of naturally scented plants. Their habits were shaped by climate, available water, diet, and the demands of daily survival. In this video, we explore how prehistoric humans cared for their bodies, teeth, hair, and surroundings without modern plumbing or manufactured hygiene products. We also examine archaeological evidence, clues from traditional societies, and the important difference between appearing clean and being protected from disease. The truth is that prehistoric humans certainly became dirty—but they were not completely indifferent to hygiene. Their tools were simple, yet their ability to observe, adapt, and solve everyday problems was far more advanced than we often assume.
