Blade Runner 2099 hits Prime Video on November 25, 2026, all eight episodes at once. The thing is, the most interesting thing in the new trailer is on screen for about two seconds. You can see it on the right side of the frame, half covered by the Prime logo. It's a billboard, and it asks a question. Have you felt with Mercer?
What's funny is that there's no Mercer in Blade Runner. He's not in the 1982 movie, and as far as I can tell, 2049 never mentions him either. The name comes from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the 1968 Philip K. Dick novel the whole franchise is based on. Let me refresh your memory. In the book, Mercer is the face of a religion. And in the teaser from July, another name from that novel is glowing in neon over the city. Buster Friendly, the TV host who exposes that religion as a fraud. In other words, the marketing skips both movies and goes straight to the book. And I think it's no coincidence, because showrunner Silka Luisa has said they went back to the book for the world building.
I go through who Mercer is, why Hampton Fancher left him out of the 1982 movie, and what the empathy box has to do with a red light district that sells human experience. I also break down the actual case from the trailer. For instance, there are the missing replicants, a blade runner named Merrick who walked away, a cure, and Cora turning Tyrell's old motto into a shackle. Then there's the red planet, and every callback to the movies, from the pyramid to the eye.
If you think about it, hiding your best idea under your own logo is a strange way to sell a show. I don't know if that was on purpose. I love the world and the sunshine, I'm less happy with how the trailer is cut, and if I were cutting it, that billboard would get a full shot.
If you like knowing what a trailer is hiding before the premiere, subscribe. I break down a new trailer every week.
