Your dryer already has almost everything it needs to start a fire. It's just waiting on one habit to go wrong.
I spent 31 years as an independent home inspector in the Ohio Valley, walking through other people's houses for a living. Dryer fires never started with something dramatic in any of the houses I saw. They started with something small nobody ever got around to — and it built for years before anyone noticed.
In this walk-through, I cover the five habits I saw most often, what each one actually does to your dryer and your house, and exactly what to check or fix — most of it in five minutes or less:
The lint screen habit almost everyone gets half-right
Why a flexible foil duct is a fire risk a rigid metal one isn't
The part of the vent system almost nobody ever checks
What overloading the drum actually does to the machine, and its lifespan
The one habit that turns everything else on this list into something you can't undo
None of this is complicated, and none of it costs much to fix. I just told people what I found for 31 years, and I'm doing the same thing here — no repairs to sell you, no products, no brand call-outs. Just what to look for.
Tell me in the comments: when's the last time you actually pulled your dryer duct off the wall and looked straight through it? Be honest.
New home walk-through every week — same house, different problem, right up until something's actually worth your five minutes.
