This album means something to me that only exists within my memory, and childhood experience. When I first saw the image I used for the cover, I was lashed with comfort and nostalgia. Reason being, I was born in December of 1996, and my earliest of memories are from very late 1999 to early 2000 (My sister was born in 2000 and I distinctly remember my mom taking her home from the hospital in her little babushka wrapping or whatever they call it.) Friday Night Lights comes from a place I’ve carried with me since I was a kid, long before I had the language to explain it but I grew up absorbing everything around me. Philadelphia at night. Broad Street. Mummers parades. My Mom Mom’s house. New Year’s parties. Family, neighbors, friends, people coming and going. VHS cameras pointed across crowded rooms. Home movies. Commercials for CDs and sweepstakes. Toys scattered around my bedroom. A Speak & Spell and a Leap Pad (Classic), The television humming somewhere in the house, stuff like that. Parts of the whole right? From my parents’ bedroom I used to look out toward the city and see the illuminated Philadelphia Phantoms sign near the stadiums. To a child, those distant lights felt enormous. They suggested an entire world happening somewhere beyond where I was, and I was taken by it. I didn’t seem to imagine things in the way they were. My imagination borrowed the texture of whatever media surrounded me, which happened to be VHS fuzz, camcorder footage, CRT glow, degraded audio, commercials, home movies, and the way it all sounded and looked. Even places I had never seen appeared in my head as though somebody had recorded them onto an old tape and my brain was the VCR playing it. I didn't understand any of it, I was literally just watching and visualizing what was beyond. beyond the window, beyond the stadium, beyond the street, beyond whatever was happening in the commercial, beyond the edge of the VHS frame. Beyond the entire neighborhood. Let me explain why this image is so important to me: The unicorn and the stars are the part of me that dreamed. The building is the part of me that saw. And the little collection of lights disappearing into the lower left is the part of me that imagined everything beyond what I could actually see. - This is what my childhood imaginations ACTUALLY looked and felt like...and somewhere inside me, that Friday night never ended. The television is still on. Someone is filming with the camcorder. People are talking in another room. Broad Street is glowing. The city is somewhere beyond the window. And in the distance, through all the darkness, I can still see the lights.
