For most of my life I pictured North Carolina as mountains: the Blue Ridge, Asheville, fog on Grandfather Mountain. Then I pointed my motor home east of Raleigh, past Interstate ninety five, and the whole state changed under my wheels. The hills vanished, the rivers turned the color of strong tea, and the sky doubled in size. This video counts down twenty five hidden geography facts about Eastern North Carolina that most travelers drive right past without noticing. You will see why the Coastal Plain covers nearly half the state and how the fall line decided where towns like Fayetteville and Rocky Mount were built. We float onto Pamlico Sound, the largest lagoon on the East Coast and part of the second largest estuary in the United States, and learn why it has almost no lunar tide. We follow the Outer Banks as they roll west, count the shipwrecks at the Graveyard of the Atlantic, watch the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse move two thousand nine hundred feet on steel beams, and climb Jockeys Ridge, the tallest active sand dune on the East Coast. Then we head inland to the unexplained oval Carolina Bays, Lake Waccamaw with three fish found nowhere else, Lake Mattamuskeet so shallow the wind pushes water from shore to shore, and pocosin swamps with peat fifteen feet deep. We find the northernmost breeding alligators in the country, walk the only true coastal national forest, and stand beside two thousand six hundred year old bald cypress trees on the Black River. We close on the wildest fact of all: the ground itself can catch fire and smolder underground for months. Have you ever driven across Eastern North Carolina, maybe on Highway sixty four or Highway seventeen? Tell me in the comments what surprised you most.
