In 2013–14, Narendra Modi was the disruptive force; today, is Rahul Gandhi occupying that space? The Gyanesh Kumar controversy has opened the box.” Rahul Gandhi has made the Election Commission row a national political issue, demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and saying that the “system that put him there” will also eventually go.
The trigger is the reported rift within the Election Commission: an investigation found that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally objected at least 14 times over 10 months to decisions taken by the poll panel. Congress has used this to allege that Kumar was functioning unilaterally and that the SIR exercise threatens electoral fairness.
On Gandhi Jayanti, protests in Delhi and Mumbai demanded Kumar’s resignation; police detained hundreds of protesters, while the Election Commission maintained that SIR decisions were taken unanimously by the three-member commission. The INDIA bloc has now planned a nationwide ‘Save Democracy’ campaign, including an MPs’ march to the ECI on 6 October and a major Delhi rally on 1 November.
