පාද යාත්‍රාවේ අවසන් දිග හැරුම #pilgrimage #travel The Sacred LegendAccording to popular local folklore, Sella Kataragama is the place where Lord Skanda (also known as Murugan or Kataragama Deviyo) met and courted Valli Amma, a local maiden raised by the indigenous Vedda chief. The Legend: Unable to win Valli's affection initially, Skanda enlisted the help of his brother, Lord Ganesh. Ganesh disguised himself as a terrifying wild elephant to scare Valli. Skanda then stepped in to save her, winning her heart and marrying her at this very location. The Tradition: Because of this divine love story, newly married couples often visit the Valli Amma Devale at Sella Kataragama to seek blessings for a long, harmonious marriage. What to See and ExperienceTo enter the main temple precinct, visitors cross the Menik Ganga, where pilgrims traditionally bathe or wash their hands and feet before entering the shrines. Ganapathi Kovil: Dedicated to Lord Ganesh, situated right where the legendary elephant encounter is said to have taken place. Valli Amma Kovil & Kataragama Devale: Shrines dedicated to Valli Amma and Lord Skanda. Mahasen Viharaya: A Buddhist temple dedicated to King Mahasen, reflecting the shared multi-religious history of the site. Riverside Stalls: The path leading to the river is famous for stalls selling local sweetmeats (like kalu dodol), fruits, handcrafted toys, and devotional offerings.
