Hiking Acatenango w/o a Guide: While in Antigua, find a shop with wifi so you can call an uber to take you to the trailhead. We ended up making a deal with the driver to pick us up the next morning to take us to the airport, so there was no need to find wifi once our hike was completed. We got to the trailhead around 10:30am or so and there were many tour groups around. There were also tons of locals selling anything you might still need for the hike! (water, gloves, coverups, walking sticks,snacks). On the hike, you’ll pass through 4 different ecosystems. Farmland, Tropical Cloud Forest, High Alpine Forest, and Volcanic! The trail starts at approximately 7,000 feet and increases to 13,000 feet above sea level so it’s suggested to acclimate before starting. We brought altitude sickness pills to help combat any altitude related symptoms and had no problems. After about two hours into the hike, you’ll arrive at Registration. It was 100Q for two persons to camp overnight. About 3 hours in is a rest area to use outdoor restrooms and purchase food and drink. Total time to make it to our campsite with a view of Fuego was just under 7 hours total! This was comprised of approximately 6 hours of hiking and 1 hour of combined breaks. Time to get down the volcano was just under 3 hours. We were not running on the way back (you will see some guides doing this) but we were moving pretty quickly and only stopped briefly once. Wilson’s Tips for Guatemala: Utilize Uber when you can. Uber is fairly cheap in Guatemala and a great way to safely get around. Use local restaurants and cafes for wifi if you need it. Chicken Buses cost about 5Q per person to get around Antigua. Most of the locals use them to get to and from work if they have to travel a distance. They get their name for the fashion in which some buses can become extremely crowded. But it's not a bad way to get across town if you're up for it!
