What does it mean to become an author? For me, it has been a journey that began with my love of words, literature, and writing.
In this episode of The Whole Woman with Pamela Marie Haskel, I share my journey as a writer and author—from enjoying spelling and literature as a young person, to helping others develop ideas for essays, writing for college publications, newspapers and magazines, and interviewing people about their music and experiences.
I also share how professors and other experiences encouraged me to write, including an article I wrote about the Sister Girls and their musical duets, including a French-language performance that I particularly enjoyed.
I talk about my love of literature, including reading works by writers such as Virgil and Sophocles, my experiences writing for publications such as the South Bend Tribune, Penumbra Magazine, the Beacon, and the Bethel magazine, and the experiences that eventually inspired me to write my own books.
I also encourage aspiring writers—especially young people—to discover what kind of writing speaks to them. You may enjoy fiction, suspense, nonfiction, historical writing, or creating imaginative characters and stories. There is no single path to becoming an author.
Not every author writes full-time, and you do not necessarily have to follow one particular educational or career path to become a writer. Your writing journey can develop according to your interests, experiences, gifts, and where you are in life.
If you love to write, explore that gift. Your voice may have something meaningful to say.
