Anxiety and OCD love a good "almost" story. "I almost passed out." "I almost ruined everything." "I almost lost control." That word, "almost," shows up constantly, and treating it like a fact is one of the things keeping the cycle going.
In this episode I break down what I call the almost story: the narrative anxiety and OCD write after a difficult episode to give your escape behaviors and compulsions credit for preventing a disaster that was never actually going to happen. The feeling was intense and real. The fear was overwhelming. You did your ritual or your avoidance and you felt better. So obviously something almost happened and your action stopped it.
That is a cognitive distortion. A catastrophic interpretation fueled by emotional reasoning, not by what actually took place. And it costs you in two directions at once: on the back end of a triggered moment, the almost story gives compulsions and avoidance undeserved credit. On the front end of the next one, it feeds anticipatory anxiety. The cycle repeats and you never get to see anxiety rise and fall on its own, which is exactly the lesson that makes recovery possible.
I talk through where the almost story shows up in the anxiety and OCD cycle, why it is a story rather than a fact, what the proof of that looks like, and what it means to start recognizing and challenging it.
