Look down at your keyboard. That weird top row, QWERTY, was supposedly designed to slow you down. The story sounds perfect. It is also mostly wrong. In this video, Milwaukee printer Christopher Latham Sholes battles a machine that keeps jamming itself, rearranges the alphabet to keep metal typebars apart, sells the layout to Remington, and accidentally locks the whole world into a layout we still use on phones with no moving parts at all. You'll learn: Why the slowdown story is a myth, and what Sholes was actually fixing How typebar jams worked, and why common letter pairs had to be split up How Remington, typing schools, and touch typing locked QWERTY in place Why the Dvorak layout, patented in 1936, never replaced it Why France uses AZERTY, Germany uses QWERTZ, and everyone else kept QWERTY Why computers and phones kept a layout built for a dead machine CHAPTERS: 0:00 The Hook: The Lie on Your Keyboard 1:06 Before the Keyboard 2:13 Watch a Jam Happen 3:17 The Lock-In 4:29 The Challenger: Dvorak 5:40 Where the Myth Came From 6:49 Computers and Phones 8:01 The Payoff: Agreement Is Hard to Beat Could you ever switch layouts?
