Tenryu-ji Temple is a sprawling Zen temple with one of the finest gardens in Kyoto and wonderful mountain views. Tenryu-ji was established in 1339 by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji (1305–1358) in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo (1288–1339).
One of the highlights of Tenryu-ji Temple is the Sogenchi Garden, which was designed by renowned Zen monk Muso Soseki and is considered one of the finest examples of Japanese garden design in the country. The garden features a series of ponds, streams, and waterfalls, as well as carefully placed rocks and plants that create a sense of natural beauty and serenity.
In addition to the gardens and main hall, Tenryu-ji Temple also features a number of smaller temples and shrines, including the Shaka-do hall, which houses a statue of the historical Buddha, and the Sho-so-in treasure hall, which displays a collection of ancient artifacts and artwork.
Overall, Tenryu-ji Temple is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Kyoto, offering a glimpse into the city's rich cultural history and stunning natural beauty.
