September 16th, 1890. Louis Le Prince boards a train to Paris. When it arrives, he's not on it. No body. No luggage. No witnesses. He was never seen again.
Weeks later, he was supposed to sail to New York and show the world his invention: a camera that could capture real movement. Two years earlier, he had filmed the Roundhay Garden Scene, often called the oldest surviving motion picture in the world. Older than Thomas Edison's films. Older than the Lumière brothers.
In this episode of Curious Journey, we follow the forgotten man who may have made the first movie, the camera he built, the films that survived, and the disappearance that has never been solved.
What you'll learn in this video:
✔ How movies actually work, and why your brain turns still photos into motion
✔ How Muybridge and Marey paved the way for cinema
✔ Who Louis Le Prince was, and how he built a single-lens motion picture camera
✔ The story behind the Roundhay Garden Scene, the oldest surviving film
✔ The chilling fact about the woman walking in that film
✔ Why Le Prince waited to show his invention, and how it cost him his place in history
✔ What happened on the train from Dijon to Paris, and what we really know
✔ The theories: Edison, the brother, suicide, or a planned disappearance
✔ Edison's patent wars, and the mysterious death of Le Prince's son Adolphe
✔ Why history remembers Edison and the Lumière brothers instead
