Danielle Smith holds press conference following Alberta referendum | FULL

Two days after Albertans voted in a provincewide referendum, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith took questions from reporters in Calgary. Smith said for as long as she is premier, she “will honour this mandate from Albertans and will not be holding another referendum on this issue.” The outcome of the referendum’s separatism question mirrors more than half a year of polling, which since the beginning of 2026, consistently showed about 70 per cent of Albertans wanted the province to remain in Canada. When asked about the separatist elements within the United Conservative Party (UCP), Danielle Smith said, “If they want to be in a position of representing our party in an official role, that there has to be a commitment that they also accept the result of the of the mandate that Albertans gave us.” But when pressed as to whether she would disqualify separatist candidates running for the board of the UCP, Smith said, “how about we see if it gets to that point,” while encouraging members to self-reflect and “make their own decisions about what their pathway would be.” For more info, please go to https://globalnews.ca/news/12110203/a...
