BlueRiver has already defined the results its Quality Management System must make possible and selected the customer groups it intends to serve. Now it faces the next question:
What must BlueRiver include in its QMS to make those promises credible?
In this episode of BlueRiver — ISO 9001:2026 in Real Life, scope is treated not as a sentence written for a certificate, but as a management and system-design decision.
BlueRiver examines:
which products and services must be included;
which locations and activities fall within the QMS;
where the organizational boundary should be drawn;
how outsourced processes and external providers must be controlled;
how to determine the applicability of ISO 9001 requirements;
how to write a meaningful QMS scope statement;
and how to design a process interaction map around the actual flow of work.
The episode also shows why a QMS should not begin at the production line or end when the truck leaves the site. The customer experiences the complete flow—from requirements and order review to planning, supply, production, verification, release, delivery, and feedback.
BlueRiver’s process map is built around actions, not departments. Processes such as Win order, Plan production, Prepare production, Manufacture order, Verify product, Release order, and Deliver order work together to serve the customer. Other processes—such as developing products and packaging, managing suppliers, ordering materials, maintaining equipment, and developing competence—enable that central flow.
The episode also explores an important strategic point: not all processes have the same weight.
For regional retailers, planning, availability, and delivery reliability are critical.
For selected private-label customers, specification control, artwork approval, traceability, and change control require greater attention.
The next question is no longer about system boundaries. It is about behavior: How should leaders shape quality decisions and actions when operational pressure rises?
This episode is part of the ISO 9001 series using the fictional company BlueRiver to make quality management practical, operational, and easier to apply.
