According to Traffic Police statistics for the past year, road accidents had claimed eight to nine lives and gravely injured nearly 25 people every day. Seventy-five percent of the injured and dead are those who were in the prime of their lives, between 15 and 45 years of age and mostly males. Most of these accidents are caused by drunk drivers. In Sri Lanka, laws governing drunk driving are • Motor Traffic Act No. 14 of 1951 • Motor Traffic (Amendment) Act No. 31 of 1979 • Motor Traffic (Amendment) Act No. 40 of 1984 • Motor Traffic (Alcohol and Drugs) Regulations 1979 • Offences Committed under the Influence of Liquor Act No. 41 of 1979 In this episode of Sinhala Medical Channel a.k.a. Oba Nodanna Medicine, we discuss the consequences of drunk driving and we demonstrate a breathalizer test.
