Our first stop was the Gurunagar Seafood Marketing Centre, popularly known as Gurunagar Fish Market, where local fishermen bring in their fresh catch. We arrived early, expecting the market to be buzzing, but the fishing boats took their time getting back to shore. And then, as soon as the boats arrived, the seafood auctions began! From fresh fish and crabs to prawns, squid and stingrays, the catch was being sold incredibly fast. We watched local fish vendors buying seafood to sell from door to door, alongside families shopping for their daily catch. It was fascinating to witness this side of everyday life in Jaffna. Next, we rode to Tirunelveli Market (Thirunelvely Market), a major wholesale and retail market in the Jaffna District. We weren't prepared for the sheer size of the vegetable section! The first floor was packed with vendors selling fresh vegetables, and we couldn't help comparing the produce with what we usually see back home in Kerala. After walking around, checking prices and chatting with local vendors, we stumbled upon a shop selling traditional kitchen items, including vegetable knives, coconut graters, string hopper trays and utensils made from bamboo and palm leaves.
