No Small Lady is inspired by the extraordinary life of Grace O’Malley, or Gráinne Ní Mháille, the 16th-century Irish clan leader, sea captain, trader, and woman remembered as Ireland's “Pirate Queen.” Born around 1530 into the powerful seafaring O’Malley family of County Mayo, Grace grew to command ships, men, land, and influence along Ireland's western coast. After the death of her second husband, Richard-in-Iron Burke, conflict with English governor Sir Richard Bingham brought the destruction of her fleet, confiscation of property, and imprisonment of members of her family. Rather than accept it, Grace took her case over Bingham's head. In 1593, at roughly 63 years old, she secured an audience with Queen Elizabeth I and negotiated directly with the English crown. An English governor once wrote of Grace that she “thinketh herself to be no small lady.” He apparently intended it as criticism. I thought it made a rather good song title. Like many people who became legends, Grace's documented history has accumulated folklore over the centuries. No Small Lady isn't intended as a literal biography. It's a musical interpretation of the authority, determination, and remarkable life of a woman who refused to disappear simply because powerful men wanted her to.
