🇮🇳 T.N. Seshan: The Man Who Changed Indian Elections
Why is T.N. Seshan remembered as one of the most significant figures in the history of Indian elections? What changed when he became the Chief Election Commissioner of India?
T.N. Seshan served as CEC from 1990 to 1996 and is associated with a much more assertive exercise of the Election Commission’s existing constitutional and legal authority. The Election Commission’s own historical account highlights his rigorous implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, the increasing role of Election Observers, and the introduction of Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) during his tenure.
In this video, we look at 4 major changes associated with the Seshan era:
🔹 Strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC)
🔹 Introduction and enforcement of EPIC / Voter ID
🔹 Greater scrutiny of Election Expenditure
🔹 Stronger supervision of the Election Machinery, including officials, observers and election security arrangements
The MCC itself predates Seshan; his significance lies particularly in its rigorous enforcement and implementation.
📚 This video is useful for UPSC CSE, APPSC, TGPSC and other competitive exams, especially for understanding Election Commission of India, Article 324, electoral reforms, Model Code of Conduct, EPIC, Election Observers and election administration.
