"Productivity is an Industrial Revolution term – for machinery. How many units produced per minute. We started using that term for ourselves. We are now treating ourselves like machines."
In this profound and practical lecture, Ustadh Hisham Abu Yusuf redefines productivity through the lens of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ – not as churning out emails and WhatsApp replies, but as divine providence and barakah.
He shares the prophetic secret of presence: being fully in the moment, switching off from technology, and giving your full attention to Allah, family, and community. He explains the power of the dumb phone, the importance of simplicity in food, and the non-negotiable fuel of the night prayer.
In this video, you will learn:
The Industrial Revolution Trap:
We are optimizing ourselves like machines, but true productivity is not about output. It is about Allah providing you with divine support – that's what multiplies your output.
The Dumb Phone Strategy:
You need a device you take to your room, wake up with, and switch off. If you cannot control your smartphone, create friction – turn it off, leave it in another room, or use a dumb phone. The Prophet ﷺ had off-time, and so should you.
Prophetic Presence:
The Prophet ﷺ turned his entire body to greet someone. He wouldn't leave someone's hand until they left his. He visited a sick Jewish boy and sat with him – no debate, just presence. That presence transmitted faith.
You Have Only This Moment:
The Prophet ﷺ said: "If the Day of Judgment comes and you have a seed, plant it." All you have is this very moment. Don't overthink – just act.
Simplicity in Food:
The prophetic culture was simplicity. Eat what is nearest. Eat together, not apart. Look at those who have less. The experience is not the food – it is the remembrance of Allah before, during, and after.
The Fuel of Night Prayer:
The Prophet ﷺ's night prayer was non-negotiable. Even on the night before Badr, he was flat on his forehead, not planning battle. His fuel came from Allah. If your day doesn't begin with remembrance, it's already finished.
Loss as a Driver:
Loss permeates everyone's life. The building you grew up in is demolished. Your back creaks. Your child grows. Time is being lost and it is not refundable. Use this awareness to block out time for what truly matters.
The Carbon Monoxide of Social Media:
Food brands, trends, and advertisements are invisible carbon monoxide – they are suffocating your ability to appreciate simplicity. Teach your children to recognize what is truly harmful.
This lecture will free you from the trap of productivity culture and guide you toward a life of presence, simplicity, and divine remembrance.
