Tel Lachish the site of Judah’s Last Stand - Land of the Bible - S09E02

After Jerusalem, Lachish was the most heavily fortified city in the kingdom of Judah, standing in the Shephelah hills about twenty-five miles southwest of the capital, above the valleys that carried traffic up from the coastal plain. In 701 BCE the Assyrian army under Sennacherib built a ramp of stone and earth against its southwest corner, broke through the wall, burned the city, and deported its people, and Sennacherib had the entire assault carved across a room of his palace at Nineveh. This episode walks the gate complex, the siege ramp, and the royal palace platform at Tel Lachish, where the biblical account, the Assyrian record, and the excavated ruins all describe the same battle.
