Learn how to check a boat's steering before you buy, in my ebook The Bluewater Buyer's Manual:
https://everydaysailing.gumroad.com/l...
A center cockpit is the hardest shape you can ask a yard to build. You cut a deep well into the middle of the hull, bury the engine under it, run the propeller shaft beneath somebody's bed, and send the steering half the length of the boat to a rudder that sits nowhere near the wheel. Plenty of yards tried it. These seven got it so right their boats are still crossing oceans decades later, and the cheapest of the seven has a median asking price of $139,500.
⚓ This is a countdown of the seven best-built center cockpit sailboats ever made, judged on construction instead of brochures: solid hand-laid glass against vacuum-infused and cored hulls, ballast ratios and lead keels, skeg-hung rudders, Lloyd's Register hull construction certification, watertight bulkheads, engine access, and what each one actually asks on the used market right now.
🔧 What is in it:
A Robert Perry cutter built in Taiwan with 43% of its all-up weight in the keel, and a 90,000 dollar spread between two examples of the same boat
The Swedish yard whose listings record an outside inspector verifying the hull, the deck, the engine beds and the chainplates, plus the model number that was used twice on two completely different yachts
The English builder that leaves the gelcoat below the waterline unpigmented, so anything starting in the laminate has nowhere to hide from a surveyor
The Dutch yard that has sent every hull out with an individual Lloyd's Register hull construction certificate since 1972, with samples cut from your actual boat and sent away to be broken
The center cockpit yacht you can walk into the engine room of, through sealed doors, with a work light and both hands free
The one yard that bonded four full-height watertight bulkheads into the hull while it was still sitting in its mould
A five-minute steering inspection you can run with a torch before you buy: the quadrant, the broken strand, the sheave leads, the idler, and the one question to ask the owner
