The closest known black hole, Gaia BH1, is about 1,560 light-years away. Let's fall into it, step by step, with real physics. On the way you'll find out what a black hole really is (and isn't), how we found one we can't see, why a small black hole would tear you apart before you even reach its edge while a giant one lets you cross in one piece, why physicists picture space itself flowing into a black hole like a river, how your phone's GPS shows that gravity slows time, and why, once you're inside, the centre isn't in front of you but in your future. Three things to remember: 1. A black hole is a place where escaping would take more than the speed of light. 2. Its edge is where space falls inward at the speed of light (and faster inside it): a point of no return you wouldn't even feel. 3. The bigger the black hole, the gentler its edge, and even the biggest ones fade away.
