OMD "Electricity" LIVE November 18, 2023 @ Darker Waves Festival (Huntington Beach, CA) Andy McClusky "We'll try not to let you down. Listen, it's matinee madness. We don't have time for art, okay? We're just going to play ten singles. Is that okay? We'll start at the very beginning. Let's go, shall we?" Lez go, indeed!! And with that, OMD dove straight into their debut-single Electricity (one of my favs) and nine more songs and absolutely killed their set. Candidly, I think OMD was a little irritated about being a little too early in the festival lineup, thinking they should've been in the evening instead of midday. He's not wrong, not wrong at all. There was definitely a buzz around the festival (and following days) about how good OMD's performance was. I've seen OMD before, and they are true musicians and performers. I really appreciate how they perform and entertain. Kinda crazy that they were only 16 when they wrote this song. McClusky has said that they were in love with Kraftwerk and "Radioactivity" was their inspiration for this song. In fact, he got invited to Wolfgang Flur's house (Kraftwerk) and upon seeing Flur's gold record for "Radioactivity" confessed to Flur that "Electricity" was pretty much their sped up version of "Radioactivity," to which Flur said something like "Yea, we know." OMD always plays this song at their live shows, often as the closer. But it was great as the opener. And they sound great live! What a treat to share matinee madness with this talented crew literally on the sand at City Beach in Huntington Beach, just a few dozen yards from the surf!
