Efficient finning is not simply about moving through the water—it is about moving precisely, with less effort and without disturbing the environment around you.
In this short video, GUE instructor John Kendall demonstrates two fundamental scuba-diving propulsion techniques:
• Frog kick
• Flutter kick
The video looks at body position, leg movement and how each technique directs water to produce controlled, efficient propulsion.
Good finning depends on more than the movement of the legs. Trim, balance and stability all affect whether the force moves you forwards—or pushes you up, down or sideways.
John teaches GUE recreational, technical, cave, CCR and underwater-photogrammetry courses. He is based at Zero Gravity in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico, and also teaches internationally.
