September 20, 2026 | Catholic Mass Readings | When God Doesn't Follow Our Timetable

Mass Readings: Isaiah 55:6–9 | Psalm 145:2–3, 8–9, 17–18 | Philippians 1:20c–24, 27a | Matthew 20:1–16a Have you ever looked at something God was doing and thought, “Lord, this just doesn't seem fair”? Today's Gospel gives us Jesus' surprising parable of the workers in the vineyard. Some work all day. Others arrive when the workday is almost over. Yet the landowner's generosity doesn't follow the accounting system we might expect. Isaiah gives us our Verse of the Day, Isaiah 55:8: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.” We'll also remember Sts. Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and Companions, whose remarkable story takes us into the beginnings of Christianity in Korea—a Church that first began growing through Korean laypeople before foreign priests could establish a regular missionary presence. And today's separate Living Word teaching takes up one of the biggest questions Christians can ask: If Jesus really is the only way to the Father, what about the billions of people throughout history who never had physical access to the Bible or Christian teaching? Can someone be saved who never had the opportunity to hear the Gospel? We'll take that question seriously, beginning with Jesus' own words and looking at them within the whole witness of Scripture and the teaching of the Church—without giving away the answer here.
