New Zealand is the biggest piece of the six percent of a continent that stayed above the water. The other ninety-four percent is still down there, and it has a name.
It is called Zealandia: 4.9 million square kilometers of continental crust in the southwest Pacific. The crust here was stretched and thinned in the Late Cretaceous, before the supercontinent broke apart, until most of it sat below sea level. In 2023 it became the first continent on Earth to be mapped completely — including the 94 percent no human will ever stand on.
In this video: a country sitting on two subduction zones that run in opposite directions, where the same two plates swap which one goes underneath · a 600-kilometer fault up the spine of the South Island you can see from a plane, last ruptured in 1717 · the mountain that lost ten meters in one night · a lake sitting in the crater of an eruption that threw out roughly 1,170 cubic kilometers of rock and ash · more than 500 hot springs and seven geysers on a single terrace · about seven meters of rain a year, and the 9,259 millimeters Milford Sound recorded in 2016, its wettest year since records began there in 1929 · a permanent lid of fresh water floating on the sea, dark enough that black coral grows a few meters down instead of in the deep ocean · a fly that fishes with its own light · the clearest fresh water ever reported, 70 to 80 meters of visibility · and a country with no native land mammals except two bats, where nine species of moa lived on the ground, the largest of them up to 270 kilograms, and one of the two bats came down and walks on the forest floor.
None of it is an accident. Almost everything here traces back to the same event: a continent that stretched, thinned and slipped beneath the sea, leaving six percent of itself in the sunlight.
Our channel icon is an iceberg, and this is the country that explains why. A small piece above the line, and all the rest of it underneath.
No Small Countries. One country at a time, and every number in this video comes from a source we read ourselves.
