How To Melt Rust Into Iron In ONI: Spaced Out! Sandbox Showcase #42

Welcome to Sandbox Showcase! In this series, I talk about various problems in Oxygen Not Included and how I've solved them with my own designs in previous streamed and non-streamed runs, by building them in Sandbox mode. In this video, I talk about how to melt Rust into 100% pure Refined Iron from the comfort of your own base, using a Metal Refinery, a heat exchanger, and some tricks involving Conveyor and Liquid Meters. As Rust directly melts at 1354.8° C into Iron and both materials share a heat capacity of 0.449, it's relatively easy to exchange the heat from the hot Iron into the cold Rust and preheat it, saving a lot of heat energy in the overall process. We use a Metal Refinery running on Liquid Uranium coolant as our heat source, as it's relatively easy to melt and is very good at handling higher temperatures as well. This setup is great either for dealing with mined-out Rust biomes or, if you have the Prehistoric Planet Pack, refining Jawbo output directly into refined Metal for very little cost. And from there it's easy to make Steel. This build is great in combination with our previous Rust Deoxidiser build (   • How To Use Rust Deoxidizers In ONI: Spaced...  ), which can give you regular Iron Ore in case you need that instead, with just a little Salt input.
