This Chinese City Looks Like It's From the Year 3000 Chongqing is one of the most futuristic cities in China, and its extreme vertical design makes it look like something from the year 3000. Built across mountains, cliffs, rivers, and steep valleys, this massive megacity has created an urban landscape unlike almost anywhere else in the world. In this video, we explore the incredible engineering behind Chongqing, from Liziba Station, where a train passes directly through a residential building, to enormous bridges crossing the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. Instead of flattening the terrain, engineers designed the city around it, creating roads, rail lines, towers, escalators, and walkways stacked on multiple levels. You’ll also see Hongyadong, the famous cliffside complex that appears to hang above the river, along with Raffles City’s Crystal, a massive structure suspended hundreds of meters above the ground between skyscrapers. Then there is the Huangjuewan Interchange, a multi-level highway system filled with ramps and overpasses, plus mountain escalators, cable cars, elevated railways, and streets where what looks like the ground floor can actually be several stories above another road. Chongqing is so vertically complex that navigation can become confusing even with GPS. Delivery drivers, commuters, and visitors often have to think in three dimensions just to understand where they are. And when night falls, the city transforms again. Skyscrapers, bridges, riverfront buildings, and mountainsides light up with massive displays that give Chongqing its famous cyberpunk atmosphere. Watch until the end to discover why Chongqing is often called one of the most futuristic cities on Earth and how its extraordinary urban design could offer a glimpse into the future of megacities.
