Wow! The newly construction of AKII BUA Olympic stadium is on final stage | Africa’s next big thing Named in honor of John Akii-Bua — Uganda’s legendary 1972 Olympic 400-meter hurdles champion — this multi-billion shilling complex represents a massive 129 million dollar investment in northern Uganda's sports landscape. Designed by ElRaeid Engineering and being constructed by Egypt’s SAMCO National Construction Company, this 20,000-seat arena is engineered strictly to international FIFA and CAF standards. As works race toward completion ahead of AFCON 2027, the site is buzzing with non-stop activity. Crews are actively executing ground leveling, laying down complex underground drainage networks, and erecting the heavy structural framing for the main spectator stands. Once complete, the venue won't just hold football matches — it will feature a full 8-lane running track, a 2,000-seat indoor sports arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and an on-site 60-room hostel for athletes. Up top, Turkish engineering specialists Polarkon are custom-fabricating a massive steel space-frame canopy roof to shelter fans from the elements. While Kampala’s Namboole Stadium and the new Hoima City venue are set to take center stage as primary hosts, Akii Bua has been officially designated as Uganda’s main standby facility for AFCON 2027. More importantly, long after the final whistle blows on the tournament, this flagship stadium is set to become a game-changing regional hub, unlocking and developing elite athletic talent right across northern Uganda.
