A kitchen drain can look fine for months while the inside is quietly shrinking. In this episode, Dale cuts open real kitchen waste pipe and shows what common sink habits leave behind after six months and after two years. Dale Merrick spent forty-one years cutting failed pipe out of houses and putting new pipe back in. Here he walks through five things that should not go down a kitchen sink: grease and cooking oil, chemical drain cleaner, coffee grounds, paint or solvent rinse water, and starchy water from pasta, rice, and potatoes. Two details matter most: hot water and dish soap may clear grease from the trap, but Dale says it can move that fat six or eight feet down the line where the pipe is cold and unreachable. Coffee grounds do not dissolve; they behave like sand, settle in the horizontal run, and can turn solid when grease is present. The surprise item is starchy water, because it can turn a greasy film into a mortar that binds other debris together.
