Before every Black girl had to be exceptional, traumatized, or constantly proving herself, there was another archetype quietly shaping a generation: the ordinary Black girl next door. In this video, we're revisiting an archetype that quietly shaped a generation: the suburban Black girl next door. I’m looking at characters like Moesha, Laura Winslow, Tia & Tamera (a part 2 will be coming soon because I have more). The point of this video is looking at how TV once made room for Black girls to have normal problems, loving families, awkward crushes, and the freedom to simply grow up. But somewhere along the way, that version of Black girlhood became harder to find.
