After seven years of construction, Shanghai Museum East was completed and opened on December 3, 2024.
With a total floor area of 113,200 square meters and an exhibition and display area of about 33,600 square meters, it comprises 20 exhibition halls and interactive experience spaces, including 13 permanent exhibition halls for cultural relics, 4 interactive experience spaces, and 3 special exhibition halls. It presents the most complete systematic display of the general history of ancient Chinese art among museums in China and abroad.
The Shanghai Museum has a total collection of more than 1.02 million items (sets), including nearly 150,000 precious cultural relics (sets), making it one of the museums with the most complete categories of ancient Chinese art in the world. After Shanghai Museum East opened, the proportion of precious cultural relics on display increased from about 4% at the People's Square location to 10.5%, and it is expected to receive more than 6 million visitors annually.
This visit was to the Bronze Gallery. "Ancient Chinese Bronzes" is one of the Shanghai Museum's most renowned permanent exhibitions. It displays more than 500 selected objects, including over 60 Grade-One artifacts, accounting for about 60% of the Grade-One bronzes in the Shanghai Museum's collection.
