You Won’t Believe – These Bicycle Crank Arms Were Forged into Two Adze Tools This is a blacksmithing project focused on creating something new from scrap materials. We started with an old bicycle crank set and separated the crank arms. The front ends of the arms were cut and then heated in a forge until they became red hot. Once heated, both crank arms were shaped with a hammer into the form of two adze tools. The existing holes in the crank arms were refined and repurposed to function as the heads of the adzes. After shaping, the metal surfaces were ground smooth, the edges were sharpened, and the tools were heat treated to improve hardness and durability. Wooden handles were then crafted and fitted into the main holes of the crank arms. An important step was ensuring the handles were firmly secured. Besides the main hole used for the handle, there is a smaller hole on the opposite side of the crank arm (originally meant for a cotter pin). A small wooden dowel was inserted into this hole and hammered tightly into place. The excess wood was trimmed off, locking the handle securely and preventing any movement.
