At 1:35 in the afternoon of 10 September 1898, Empress Elisabeth of Austria - Sisi - stepped out of the Hôtel Beau-Rivage in Geneva to catch the steamer home. Travelling incognito, without police and with one lady-in-waiting, she was struck on the quay by a 25-year-old anarchist who had come to kill someone else. She got up, thanked the strangers who helped her, and walked on to the boat. This is her last day, minute by minute, told through the memoir of the woman who walked beside her: the warnings she waved away, the yacht she refused, the white orchids, the file, and the boat that still floats in Geneva today.

Notes on sources
Time of death: 2:10 p.m. in the Geneva civil register; Countess Sztáray writes that the doctor pronounced death at 2:40. Lucheni's intended victim is named in different sources as Prince Henri d'Orléans or Philippe, Duke of Orléans. The distance she walked after the stab (about 100 m) is an estimate. The Geneva newspaper that revealed her identity has not been identified.
