LEG Day! Deep Sand & Single Track | Riding Sam Houston National Forest with H.A.R.D.

Join me for an adventure ride through the Sam Houston National Forest with the H.A.R.D. (Houston Adventure Road Dualsport) riding group. This ride explores some of the forest's most popular trails, including Big Loop Trail, also known as Tram Trail, a historic railroad grade once used to haul timber through the East Texas piney woods. Riding my Suzuki DR-Z4S, I tackled everything from fast forest roads to deep sand and tight single track weaving through the trees. The sandy sections demanded focus, momentum, and careful line selection, especially with a 50/50 rear tire that struggled to find traction in the softest terrain. A more aggressive knobby tire would have made the sand easier, but adapting to the conditions is part of the adventure. Along the way, we rode through towering pines, navigated shared trails where oncoming riders can appear at any time, and experienced the unique beauty of the Sam Houston National Forest. From the historic Tram Trail to the challenging sand sections near Kelly's Pond, this ride delivered a little bit of everything East Texas has to offer. After a great morning on the trails, our group returned to Montgomery, Texas, for lunch at Burger Fresh, where we swapped stories and relived the highlights of another fantastic H.A.R.D. ride.
