This silent, full-length POV video documents Part 1 (outbound ascent and basin descent) of the Kearsarge Pass Trail, crossing from the Eastern Sierra into Kings Canyon National Park. Starting from Onion Valley Trailhead at 2,803 m (9,197 ft), this outbound segment covers roughly 11.2 km (7.0 mi) with over 800 m (2,620 ft) of elevation gain, topping out at Kearsarge Pass at 3,601 m (11,816 ft) before descending to the Kearsarge Lakes basin at 3,319 m (10,890 ft). Part 2 (inbound return) is linked below.
Beginning at the foot of Independence Creek in the John Muir Wilderness, the route ascends a sustained series of well-graded granite switchbacks. The trail passes Little Pothole Lake at km 2.3 (1.4 mi), the shores of Gilbert Lake at km 3.7 (2.3 mi), and Heart Lake before contouring above Big Pothole Lake. Reaching Kearsarge Pass at km 7.6 (4.7 mi) on the Sierra Crest, the trail crosses the boundary into Kings Canyon National Park, opening panoramic vistas of the Kearsarge Pinnacles, Bullfrog Lake, and the high peaks of the Great Western Divide. The segment concludes with the descent into the glacially carved Kearsarge Lakes basin.
Filmed in real time in 4K HDR with ambient natural sounds and no background music or commentary, this video provides an objective visual record of granite steps, scree trail surfaces, switchback gradients, and sub-alpine terrain.
This video is part of a series documenting a California hiking trip in autumn 2024.
