Jodie Hopperton hosts this live edition of “The Debrief” podcast to unpack what news media must do now as the arrival of personal agents is set to rapidly upend the connection between audiences and content.
The podcast was recorded on stage to wrap up the International News Media Association’s Media Tech & AI Week in San Francisco. Key thoughts from this episode:
• Personal agents are dismantling all access points for our audiences. Consumer agentic assistants have arrived and will rapidly change how people discover, consume and pay for journalism.
• The liquid content era has just been fast-tracked. Publishers must make indispensable content available however and wherever audiences want it. The winner of INMA’s new product pitch contest, HyperContent.ai, just raised this bar.
• Publishers must set the terms of AI access now. Switch to whitelists from blacklists. Embrace the agentic licensing framework developed by RSL, ILC, SPUR and IAB Tech Lab. Media industry solidarity is set to win the first platform licensing deals.
• Media needs more than a storied heritage. Recognisable journalists, trusted relationships and distinctive reporting are becoming critical advantages as information floods the market. Local expertise, deeper niches and smart collabs with journalist-creators will command greater strategic value.
• Organisational readiness is the leadership imperative. Redraw responsibilities; embrace agentic capacity with precision.
