Kigali has officially entered a major 30-month transformation period following the start of construction works to expand and modernize the Prince House–Giporoso–Masaka road. The 10.3-kilometre road, one of Kigali’s busiest transport corridors, will be upgraded from two to four traffic lanes. The project will also include a 1.3-kilometre elevated section, flyovers, underpasses, redesigned intersections, bridges, drainage systems, street lighting and modern traffic-management infrastructure. The project is expected to improve mobility between central Kigali and rapidly developing areas including Remera, Giporoso, Nyandungu, Masaka, Kabuga and the wider eastern corridor. Once completed, it should reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety and facilitate the movement of people, services and commercial goods. The project dates back to June 2019, when the governments of Rwanda and China signed a US$42.8 million grant agreement to support the road’s expansion. Its implementation reflects the continuing cooperation between the two countries in transport infrastructure and sustainable economic development. However, road users should prepare for temporary disruptions throughout the construction period. Traffic diversions may affect routes around Giporoso, Sonatube, Kimironko, Zindiro, the industrial zone, Ndera, Gasogi, Kabuga, Kicukiro and Busanza. These arrangements may change depending on the construction phase and traffic conditions. Drivers, residents and businesses operating along the corridor are advised to follow official announcements from the Rwanda Transport Development Agency, the City of Kigali and Rwanda National Police.
