Learn the major ECG waveforms, intervals, and segments and how they connect to the heart’s electrical activity.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how the P wave, QRS complex, T wave, PR interval, QRS duration, QT interval, and ST segment relate to atrial depolarization, ventricular depolarization, ventricular repolarization, and the cardiac electrical conduction pathway.
Rather than simply memorizing what each part of the ECG represents, I connect the tracing back to what the heart is actually doing electrically so ECG interpretation becomes more logical and easier to understand.
In this ECG lesson, you’ll learn:
• What the P wave represents
• How atrial depolarization creates the P wave
• What the PR interval measures
• How AV nodal conduction affects the PR interval
• What the QRS complex represents
• How ventricular depolarization creates the QRS complex
• Why QRS width matters during ECG interpretation
• What the T wave represents
• How ventricular repolarization creates the T wave
• What the QT interval represents
• What the ST segment represents
• How waveforms, intervals, and segments fit together during systematic ECG interpretation
Understanding these basic ECG components is essential before moving into cardiac rhythm interpretation.
Once you understand what each waveform, interval, and segment represents electrically, it becomes much easier to recognize why sinus rhythms, atrial rhythms, junctional rhythms, AV blocks, and ventricular rhythms look different on an ECG.
My approach is conduction-first:
Electrical conduction → ECG appearance → Rhythm interpretation → Bedside clinical thinking
The goal is to help you understand ECGs instead of relying only on memorized definitions and rhythm patterns.
This lesson is part of my complete ECG/EKG Interpretation for Nurses course. If you haven’t already, start with the cardiac electrical conduction pathway, then continue through this lesson before moving into my 7-step ECG interpretation method and cardiac rhythm interpretation.
This course is designed primarily for registered nurses, nursing students, ICU nurses, critical care nurses, emergency nurses, telemetry nurses, CCU nurses, and cardiac nurses learning ECG/EKG interpretation.
