Relaxing walk through Chania's old town. Part 1.
Wonderful cozy little streets filled with restaurants and old houses in cheerful colors.
Chania is Crete's second largest city and is located on the island's north coast about 70 km from Rethymno and 145 km from Heraklion, and has about 65,000 inhabitants.
Chania was the capital of Venice on the island before the Ottoman conquest. The old town, which forms a large part of Chania's centre, is known as one of the most beautiful places in all of Crete, with a cluster of old houses around a clear harbour basin and with the 17th-century Venetian lighthouse as its most famous symbol.
In the same place where Chania is today, there was a larger settlement during the Minoan period. It is probable, but not proven, that this was the ancient city of Kydonia.
In 69 BC, Crete was occupied by the Roman Empire and upon its division in 395 AD, the island became part of the Byzantine Empire. Crete was under Arab rule between 824 and 961, when it returned to Byzantine rule. It was at this time that the city was named Chania. From the 13th to the 17th century, the city was Venetian. In 1645, the Ottoman Empire conquered Crete from the Republic of Venice. On Crete, the city of Heraklion, which resisted, was besieged for 21 years before surrendering. The Turks ruled the island for the next 200 years. The island's inhabitants were heavily taxed and forced to convert to Islam, but most of the population remained Christian. The population revolted many times, the first time in 1770. In 1821 the Greek War of Independence broke out and in 1832 Greece became an independent state. However, this state did not include Crete. Before the island was returned to the Turks, it was ruled by Egypt. In the Greek national movement, the whole of Crete played a significant role in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Platanias and Agia Marina is nearby.
