Kenya’s Monday Crackdown: Burundian Traders Fear Being Forced Out | Ruto Update

Kenya’s planned Monday crackdown on foreign hawkers and small-scale traders has sparked fear, backlash and serious questions across East Africa—especially among Burundian traders living and working in Kenya. President William Ruto directed authorities to begin taking administrative action against foreign nationals involved in hawking and small retail businesses from Monday, September 7, 2026. But before the enforcement begins, some Kenyan traders are strongly supporting the decision, while civil society organisations warn that it could trigger xenophobia, harassment and discrimination against refugees, migrants and legal EAC citizens. Burundian traders have also expressed fear and uncertainty. Burundi’s government says it is monitoring the situation and has asked Kenyan authorities to ensure that no Burundian citizen is mistreated.
