Which video game franchise dominated each era? This bar chart race tracks the most popular video game franchises from 1986 to 2026, showing how gaming giants like Mario, Pokémon, Grand Theft Auto (with recent titles like GTA 6), Call of Duty, Minecraft, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Sonic, Fortnite, The Witcher, League of Legends and many more rose, peaked and battled for the top spot. From the Nintendo and arcade era to the rise of 3D gaming, online multiplayer, esports and modern open-world blockbusters, watch 40 years of gaming history unfold month by month. The ranking is based on a Historical Popularity Index (HPI), designed to estimate each franchise’s relative global popularity over time using major game releases, cultural impact, player interest, media attention and long-term franchise relevance. Average IGN score across all franchisegames, shown inside each bar. Which franchise had the greatest era — and which one truly dominated gaming history? About the Historical Popularity Index The Historical Popularity Index (HPI) is a normalized composite metric designed to estimate and compare relative public interest over time. It incorporates factors such as contemporary media exposure, cultural relevance, audience reach, search and online attention where available, major releases or events, and long-term historical prominence. Because reliable popularity data varies greatly across different eras, the index is calibrated using the best available evidence for each period and adjusted to maintain historical comparability and smooth long-term trends. All values are then normalized against the highest level of popularity observed in the entire dataset. A score of 10,000,000 represents the absolute all-time peak of popularity, while all other values indicate relative levels of interest compared with that benchmark. #Gaming #VideoGames #GamingHistory #Nintendo #PlayStation #GTA #barchartrace Music: Scott Buckley - Memories of Stone, Starfire, Legacy.
