On September 8th, the Meet My Neighbor Productions team returned to the Rosebud Reservation in Mission, South Dakota, continuing our journey filming NATIVE | The Prodigies of an Icon. This time, we're exploring a story about much more than buffalo. We spend time learning about Siċaŋġu Co, the economic engine of the Siċaŋġu Lak̇ota Nation, and an ambitious vision for what the future of the Rosebud Reservation could look like. Their work is guided by the 7Gen Vision — the idea that the decisions made today should help create the world their descendants will inherit seven generations, or roughly 175 years, from now. Grounded in Lak̇ota culture and ancestral knowledge, Siċaŋġu Co is working toward Wicozani — “the good way of life.” That means looking at the health of a community as something interconnected: economic self-sufficiency, cultural revitalization, sustainable housing, food sovereignty, climate resilience, holistic health, and lasting prosperity. And buffalo have a role in that future. Throughout the production of NATIVE, we've seen that bringing buffalo back isn't simply about restoring an animal to the landscape. For many Indigenous communities, it is connected to rebuilding food systems, strengthening economies, restoring relationships with the land, and revitalizing traditions disrupted over generations.
