A 31-year-old hairstylist from Memphis, Tennessee saved $18,400 for her own wedding, one client at a time, over six years. She was eleven days married and on the fourth night of her honeymoon cruise when she disappeared somewhere between the deck nine corridor and her cabin. Her key card never opened another door. Her phone was on the charger. Her shoes were beside the bed. The captain turned the ship around and searched its own overnight track for eleven hours with the coast guard and two diverted merchant vessels. Nothing was ever found — not that day, not that week, not ever. The case was closed inside a year. Lost overboard at sea, manner undetermined. Desiree Coleman had signed a $750,000 life insurance policy five months before the wedding, with her husband as sole beneficiary. Collecting it turned out to be far harder than anybody expected, and what he had to do to get the money is the reason this case reopened seven years later. There was no body, no scene, no witness anybody knew about, and no forensic evidence that a crime had happened at all. What eventually convicted him was eleven hours of his own sworn testimony, a documentary that aired on a Tuesday night, and one line on page 211 of a deposition that nobody understood the significance of for five years.
